paint the transmission pan ?? Red ??

Post by TX82FIAT »

I recently purchased a new gasket from Mark to eliminate the leaking transmission pan. During disasembly I realized some of the trasmission pan studs were stripped so I pulled them and ordered new 25mm studs for the bottom of the transmission. Luckly the threads in the transmission block were all fine. Cleaning the years of gunk off the bottom of the transmission and sanding the transmission pan to bare metal to remove some of the stuff gave me an idea. Hase anyone painted the bottom of the trasmission pan another color other than black to help spot a leak quickly. I've been thining of painting the transmission pan with the appropriate oil and gas resistant paint a red to clean it up and help detect any future leaks. Has anyone done this? thoughts? Should look good when done and I have the proper engine paint already.

If it was me I'd paint it silver with high temp exhaust manifold paint. I think any color other than black is a good idea. Like you said: easier to spot leaks.

the advantage to black, is it will actually help cool the transmission. same reason radiators are painted black

I painted my cover pink. The ants like it and it matches the rear end cover. I used high gloss paint to improve air friction.

Tobi, I took a look at your Spider on Flickr. I have my doubts that you actually painted you trans pan and diff cover pink making your post somewhat humerous. No worries, after cleaning and sanding the pan re-painting is required so I thought a little bit of color would not hurt since I have red on hand. However, if you did indeed paint them pink. To each his own. If you like the color pink then more power to you big guy. At least your not hanging two pool balls in a canvas sac from your rear end. On a side note, Nice speaker build.

Beek, did not think about black as a cooling color but it makes sense. Maybe I'll swing buy the store and pick up some black paint. Thought the red might look cool if the car ever drove over an auction block like you see when watching Barret-Jackson or be a discussion topic for FIAT guys if there is a need to look under the car at an event.

For what it's worth, this came from a Thermodynamics Eng. site:

I invite you to do a sample calculation [q=kA*(DeltaT/DeltaX)] on how much insulation value is added by, say, a .001-.010" thick layer of paint of any kind. You will find that the temperature rise is VERY SMALL and not worth further consideration. Paints and finishes have VERY LITTLE influence on insulation (conduction). Also, once any surface is coated with oil, grease, and dirt, it certainly will make NO DIFFERENCE because it's only what's on the outside skin that makes any difference.

Bottom line: go with pink!

Busted :D
I actually painted my cover black, pink does not suit me or my car.
Thanks for the compliment on the speakers.
If you really are concerned about temperature reduction here is the way to go
http://www.fiat124spiderservice.de/html ... wanne.html
This reduces the temp. a lot and ads 30% oil to the transmission.
It is aluminum so it only comes in silver, but it could still be painted, maybe in pink.

Ray I have high-temp black paint in my garage if you want it. Red would kinda be fun, but if you want to do black and don't want to buy a can for such a small area hit me up and I'll let you use mine.
