Trunk Storage Solution

It has been bugging me for awhile as to how to store the basic stuff I carry around in the trunk. So I came up with a box that attaches to the rear sheet metal via some custom wood wedges, and holds the usual items, plus allows the mounting of the fire extinguisher on the side, and securely holds the 2 folding chairs that I always carry. Hopefully no more stuff banging around back there causing trouble. I still need to figure out how to mount the original jack, for now I just leave it out unless I am doing a show.

Are you aware that there is a bracket for the jack in the passenger side wheel well (Behind the vertical boards)? There's a rubber tie down that came with the car that secures it to the bracket. That way it's out of sight, but available, and it doesn't bang around.

Thanks, I hate that thing over there and would never drive around with it in that position. Complete Kluge, whole bottle of Chianti when they came up with that one. I just put it there for a show.

Question for those of you who use this: Doesn't the unstrapped end of the jack (the left side in this pic) bang around (up and down) on a large bump or pothole? I would assume also that eventually the tool kit could slip out and the jack be left loose, banging around and creating havoc in the trunk?

From memory... I think that there's a piece of sheet metal that the end of my jack fits into, the strap then holds the other end down and it doesn't bounce around. TBH - it's been a long time since I checked, the trolley jack in the garage is much easier and roadside servicing hasn't been needed in a long time (famous last words)....

Looking on mine, it looks like the jack would (if got a little loose) just bang up and down on the inside of the wheel well, a terrible situation if so. But I will go take another look to be sure! Thanks.

On my 72, there's a separate bracket for the tool kit (and a second strap) on the upper left wheel well. Not really very "handy". But it may stabilize the jack if the tool kit was in its own bracket (assuming, of course, that bracket is there on you model). I'll know more later this week when I put those things back in place.

My 76 also has a separate tie down on the left wheel well, but I haven't used it in a very long time. Was always a PIA to get to and even more so since I put a retractable antennae on the left rear fender.
I have this very nice tool kit that I suppose would be good to have for a show, but honestly can't remember the last time I actually used any of the tools in the kit.

I stand corrected of my criticism of the jack/toolbox mounting method (my "bottle of Chianti" crack) on my 80FI. There is indeed a piece of sheet metal up in the front end of the wheel well area with a hole in it intended to hold the end of the jack securely, and then the strap and plate at the other end will hold the system securely. I assume that if you slightly open the jack after installing the strap, that then the tension can be increased to make it more secure? Ordered a strap and will use this. Leaves more room in my storage box for other stuff anyway.
