Gauges

Post by Ptoneill »

Ok, so putting the chrome rings on my gauges turned into an exercise in frustration. I was thinking of going with aftermarket gauges... I found 4 inch speedo/ tach in VDO but I was wondering if someone has aftermarket gauges and could give me advice. I have a 79 carb and I would like to keep it fairly simple...ok as simple as the electronics on an Italian car can be.

I've used VDO gauges (voltmeter, EGT, external temp, clock) and done a custom face that sticks over the stock one. Looks ok. Couple of techniques to make it look right at night - either "stack" stickers or carefully align with the stock pattern so the through illumination looks good.

Here's some I did...

Next ones I'll white out the needle too.

swapping to the chrome bezels is a pain, but can be done (and they look great when finished).

Autometer gauges are fantastic I'm using a full complement of them in my spider. And they are accurate and come in many styles. Full mechanical or electrical.

I read that link and it was usefull....I broke one lens, and the large bezels will no even fit over the 4 inch speedometer gauge..??

I have looked at them, I wish they had 4 in gauges with chrome bezels...... I would like to keep the mechanical speedo as I have had nothing but grief finding a 5/8 inch digital output for the French made GM auto transmission I have.

Does look nice!

Yes Clark is correct about it being a vacuum gauge. Btw I won't use an ammeter as the electrical system has to pass through it. Voltmeter is much better and still does the job for showing a discharge situation.

Actually, autometer does make gauges with a chrome bezel and I believe they would have the proper mechanical speedo for your tranny..

Cheers!

Buy the Stainless Bezels from AR. They basically press fit on over the gage and you wont need to bend the edge over to create a lip. Just run a bead of silicon around the inside of the bezel after you have seated the gage. I had to slightly sand the edges of the speedo and tach to get them to fit into the bezel.

All in all, very painless and you dont have to worry about damaging or denting them as much as you do with the chrome bezels.
