What to do with shot seats....

Post by aslives »

I love my 1979 124 but the seats are shot. I guess its from someone in the driver side bending back and around to get at the top causing the seats frame to be pretty bent and uncomfortable.

I'm seeing if a local seat guy can fix them but also just considering getting new seats. I'd like to preserve the look of the car maybe even match the beige interior - does anyone have any recommendations for replacement seats?

Thanks!

When I had mine reupholstered, they repaired the bent parts and welded a broken section as well.

Well it was in the off season, paid cash, current customer, etc, and it was about a grand. I chose the material and handed them the seats (front and back) and told them I wanted the same stitching style as original, which they copied well.

I'm 6'5", and at maximum extension the top of the stock headrest is about half an inch below my skull, so my head would just shear off in a rear-ender. I exchanged for Honda S2000 seats, extremely comfy. BUT I did have to cut away the seat rails entirely, and also part of the floor stiffening sheet metal hump that runs side to side beneath the seat. And with these seats all the way back, they interfere with the tonneau cover so I had to give that up. I estimate that I sit an inch or two lower than I did in the stock seats.

I ran those for about 7 years, and the leather was in poor shape. I found a set of leather skins on ebay, out of china, that don't quite fit as well as factory but still look great. I'm colourblind, so I don't know how well the match my '84 beige interior.

You can probably pick up a set of S2000 seats for around $500, and the new skins were $350.

I had mine reupholstered without using a kit in matching original leather.
I'm really happy with the results. You'll never regret doing it right the first time.

The seats, and headrests and steering wheel cover came with leather originally yes.
I added the armrests in leather.

I have welded in repairs to old seat frames. It isn't very hard, and it doesn't take long.
