Rebuild kit for Bosch alternator? (1981)

Post by maxm50 »

Hi all,
I'm replacing my water pump (preventive maintenance) and once I took the alternator/water pump belt off, I noticed that the alternator shaft squeaks a bit when I spin it by hand. Bearings going bad? I'm also not sure if it spins freely enough. I don't have much experience with what a free-spinning alternator should sound like or how long it should spin until it comes to a stop. Here's a video of mine:

I haven't noticed any terrible noises coming from it when the car is running, but I wouldn't say it's completely silent either. If the bearings are indeed on their way south, I'd rather rebuild it now while I have everything apart anyway.

Is there a rebuild kit available for these? I've heard they are rebuildable but I haven't heard what parts should be replaced or where to get them. I've already replaced the voltage regulator, so I guess I'd need everything but that (especially bearings). It's the stock alternator on a 1981 Spider.

Thanks!
Max

That could be bearings or chewed up slip rings.

Alternator & Starter Parts Wholesale is not too far from me being just about 26 miles up the road in Port Richey Florida.

Here is the link to the Bosch section of their website: https://www.aspwholesale.com/alternator ... bosch.html

I just converted my Hitachi alternator on the ISUZU 4FB1 Diesel in my Spider to an external regulator and was able to turn down and polish the slip ring in my drill press. I used the standard Chrysler external voltage regulator from just about any 1969 to 1990 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth/Jeep product and wired it directly to the brush holder.
