Trunk Board and Carpet w/Pics
Trunk Board and Carpet w/Pics
I finally finished up the replacement trunk boards for my 80 FI. Without existing boards to use as a template it turned out to be fairly challenging to get all of the curved cuts right. All in all though I think it turned out pretty good. I still need to install the two metal pieces that support the right and left bottom boards and the plastic cover that goes over the fuel lines. Even without it for now the boards are pretty stable. Here are some pics.
Material used was a project type board from the local hardware store.
Cut tight around the battery box so the lip of the box is used as support.
Around Fuel Lines
I cut the back of the side board a little long (not really sure why). I may need the extra length when I install the carpet. If not I may cut it down a little.
1x2 Support for the left side board. I left about ¾ of an inch on each side of the 1x2 to create a lip. One side goes over the edge of the battery box and the other on the back lip of the trunk.
Template
Carpet install is coming soon.

Re: Trunk Board and Carpet w/Pics
I finally got the trunk carpet cut this weekend. Here’s how it came out.
Bonus! I was digging around in some old parts and found one of these.

Neither did I No one could tell me how the carpet attached to the sides to cover the jack and fuel lines so I just closed it in to give it a cleaner look when the carpets installed.engineerted wrote:Wow! there are boards for the side? I did not know that.

Hey Rick,
My carpet only covers the boards in the trunk. The carpet just lays on top of the boards. I also don't have any side boards on my 79. just the ones on the bottom. I hope this helps. Excellent job on the boards they look great.

Thanks Dave. I figured that was the case after seeing some pics of the original boards but wasn't for sure. I was prompted to do the side boards after seeing some pics of the original carpet. It looks like it goes up the side of trunk. I couldn't figure out how to attach it to the sides so I made the boards to support it.

In my '82 the carpet is attached to the side boards only and just rests on the bottom sections. The drivers side board attaches with a small sheet metal screw at the top and the passengers side has a small gromet in it that goes over a connector on the car that has a twist closure. The carpet comes out as one piece with the two side boards attached.
Hope that helps.

John,
That helps allot! You wouln't happen to have pics of the passenger side board/carpet where the grommet attaches to the side of the trunk? I'm also wondering... is the carpet glued to the side boards on your car?
Thanks,
Rick

Yes, the carpet is glued to the side boards, but not the bottom boards. I'll take a pic or two when I get home tonight.
