Relocating filler on fuel tank?

Post by Ptoneill »

Ok so here is the deal, I removed the fuel filler door as part of the custom work being done on the car (79 124). I am finding that putting the filler in the trunk while trying to retain the lower fill hole on the bottom left side of the tank is challenging. Can I fill that hole and have a new filler pipe welded to the top of the tank? The car is carburated, will this have negative effects like slow filling or making the fuel pump handle shut down? are there any examples that people have?

Thanks for any help!

yes, you can fill from the top of the tank, i would suggest some kind of baffling at the point of the tank, but in my race cars, its wide open on the top filling, and no ill effects

Thank you Beek,

I was thinking of extending the filler tube into the tank by about 4 inches to prevent fuel from sloshing into the filler neck. Glad to hear that there are no ill effects.

I might rethink that line of thinking (the extended tube in the tank part) ....as the tank fills and once gas hits the end of the tube inside the gas tank the pressure of the gas in the tank pushing up the tube will make for the mess you are trying to avoid... and may be hard or inpossible to fill the tank to the top .... the new "full" spot in the tank would be when gas gets just past that tube level inside the tank .... it makes sense in my head ... but I have been wrong before

There are other people on here that have do that. Look at Miscuglio Alan's Fiat. I am planning on using a boat or aircaft filler neck. I am going to weld the Fiat filler door, and cut a hole and mount new filler. The pic I attached does not show the door. Not sure I will use that filler or not, but that can give you more options.

Here is a place for the aircraft filler, but you have figure out the connecting pipe.

as a boat owner, i'm all too familiar with the filler shown and not sure why you'd want to put one on a car.

you need a special tool to open/close it, so i suppose there is some small measure of added security, but how much gas are you really protecting? on a boat, it can be hundreds of gallons, but our cars?

the tool to open/close it has two ends with different sized teeth. one size is for the gas fitting and the other for the pumpout fitting. use the wrong size and you'll scratch the cap up real quick. the cap is tied to the fitting with a cable about 12 inches long, great for scratching up the side of the car.

to each his own, but not for me.

I guess you have never heard of a locking gas cap. Difference if you lose the key you have to drill it out or get a locksmith. I pin spanner wrench can be used to remove this cap. The tool I have is one sided so no chance of getting it wrong. Locking gas caps are not just about keep people from stealing your gas, although if you are not home it makes it a hassle to get gas in the car. People put things in your gas also. I live in a big city.

The chain that retains the cap is easy to cut. Not all aircraft filler caps have a chain, and not all have a locks. Flush mounted gas caps are becoming more common in automobiles, more trucks.

Just idea's thought that was what this forum was about.

The aircraft/boat cap would be an excellent choice if someone wanted a flush mounted exterior filler, particularly if you got it anodized the same color as the paint. Mine will be safely tucked in the trunk so I probably will not use a locking cap.

A good point was made about extending the filler tube into the tank....basic fluid dynamics 101.

Thank for ALL the ideas!

I like pat's ideal and have thought of doing the same thing just wondering if opening the trunk every time is really
worth the extra security. I may just put a pin switch connected to an alarm on the gas door, or move the filler into
trunk I'm going to flip a coin on this...
