Trunk ideas

Hey I'm planning on redoing my trunk this winter and I'm looking for some different ideas of what I could do. If you guys have an awesome custom trunk post a pic or 2 if you could. Thanks!

Not sure if I'd call it an "awesome custom trunk" but I just finished mine. It's 1/8 birch plywood covered (urethaned to keep it moisture resistant) with carpet. The carpet is velcro'd in place and the side boards are velcro'd to a couple of vertical bars (idea I stole from this forum).

I built a custom battery box because with the battery disconnect switch the stock one wouldn't fit over the battery. That also let me leave a cutout so I could access the switch easily.

Here are some pictures of my trunk. We painted the spare tire area with one spray can of truck bed liner and used gloss black spray paint for the fuel tank area. We used 1/2" oak plywood and put a piece of angle under the trunk latch and a piece of flat plate under the battery tray so we could have the seam/split in the center. A little disappointed that the wood grain doesn't match, but went for straight wood rather than matching. (We may cover it with carpet anyway.) We also used two 2" L brackets with velcro on each side to hold up the side panels. For more details on our restoration, you can go to Restoration Projects "75' Restoration".

Here is what i did with mine. redesigned the spare lid so i dont have to remove the sides to get to the spare.
material is 1/2" plywood.

I followed several other trunk projects on this site before finally deciding on what to do. Basically I wanted to have easy access to the space around the spare tire, so I can store some parts and hand tools there. I choose a 3 piece floor deck plan. Also, I prefer to use thin, light, material. I used 1/4" plywood underlayment from home depot. It is like a veneer on one side and can be stained. It's also really cheap. The indoor/outdoor carpet was also from home depot, 3' x 12' (12' is roll length), TrafficMaster Elevations, sky grey, about $13.00. Zinsser 1-2-3 Bulls Eye white sealer was used on all wood surfaces.


The side panel lower attachment points are wood blocks held in place by JB-Weld.


The rear supports were made from sheet steel bent 90° and riveted to the rear bulkhead.


I had to add a spare tire hold down strap for the obvious reasons.


The "spacer" block was added to keep the deck panels from flexing under weight. There is a grove cut through the center for the tie down strap to lay in. A piece of carpet is glued to the underside of the block to keep it from rattling.


I wired 2 white LED's to the original 12V trunk lamp. The LED's come on when the headlight light switch is in the middle position (parking lamps), even when the car is not running.





To replace a burned out tail light, I have to pull the deck panels, remove 2 screws from the side panel (on the side with the burned out bulb), and pull back the carpet covering the tail light assembly. It sounds like a lot of work, but to only takes 2 minutes.

I kept the original cardboard templates used to cut the panels if anyone is interested in them. Measuring and making the templates is the biggest part of the project. In the end, it was worth it.
