Dirty overflow bottle

Hey gang, I just tried a neat trick and cleaned up my dirty coolant overflow bottle. I remember my Dad would go down to the beach and clean the camping cast iron cookware by rubbing sand in them. So I figured I'd try it seeing as nothing else was working. I put about a cup of water in it with about a cup of play sand and plugged both ends, shook the bejeebers out of it and it came out clean as a whistle! I don't know about you all, but mine was so dirty I couldn't see the fluid level in it and it was driving me nuts. (Don't have far to drive.)

with help, we anticipate the following this weekend:
head replacement to a reworked 1800 head on the two litre block
timing belt and tensioner replacement
radiator replacement
and of course,
the crinkle painted cam covers...

I've used rice (for the overflow bottle and also the brake reservoirs). A little more expensive than sand but results are similar...

with the cost of rice skyrocketing these days, I'd stay with sand until it becomes a rare commodity too

That sounds like it would work too Perthling. But I'm in construction and I don't know about down there, but up here it's pretty slow. So, if my wife caught me using groceries to clean my car? I don't even want to think about it.

I suppose if you did use rice, you could cook it up afterward and have a nice side dish of brown rice. What about kitty litter?

The sand trick is exactly how I cleaned mine, of course I used some local Hawaiian beach sand. If you guys are interested I'll pre-package some "coolant cleaning kit" and send you some. Make sure to rinse it out very well, sand is not an engine's friend.
