Chrome/Metal Fender Lip Mystery (to me)

Post by ThatsAmore »

Trying to figure out what the story is on these. I've done a Google search and found literally a handful among hundreds of 1981 spiders that have this trim. Are these factory originals, dealer installed, aftermarket, custom or....? Recently bought the car and curious.

My understanding is that these sorts of things were usually installed by the dealer. Along with door edge protectors, pinstriping, luggage racks, radios, etc.

Thanks Bryan. Yeah on closer inspection it looks as if its glued on as opposed to wrapped around to the inside of the fender. Either way it looks like it was professionally done. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess

Yes they were dealer installed. I have them on my 79 a d they are attached with adhesive. I'm considering removing mine but not sure how difficult removing the adhesive will be. Kind of like them Kind of don't.

In 1981 when I bought one of my Spiders new, it was a dealership installed option. I saw both metal and plastic versions at dealerships. The metal ones were screwed into place like my 79 Spider had on it when I bought it. The plastic ones glued on using an adhesive tape. Both were available in black (like my 79 had) and "chrome".
