what should the firewall look like.....

where the heater-core stubs penetrate it?
Mine appears to have been sabotaged by a previous owner.
What SHOULD be there? is there some sort of grommet or similar that covers the big gaping hole?

hmm, I think he used a axe to open the hole a bit. It should have a grommet and metal shield to seal the hole around the heater tubes. The problem is with the replacement heater valves. They are retrofitted from the X1/9 and require the heater tubes to be modified. If you don't bend the tube, you have to enlarge the firewall hole

I should have one or two of the rubber grommets and the metal shields, but it will be a challenge to mount it to the surrounding chewed up sheet metal. It looks like the lower right screw holes is still there, maybe you can bend back or beat out the metal from the inside. Are you keeping the heater core? If not pull it and the tubes out and make a plate to cover the hole and paint it black.

That engine is looking sweet, great work! Just curious, what are the boxes on either side of the engine bay mounted to the inner fenders?

No. I'd happily pay you now to ship me one of those grommet / shields. I'm undecided on the heater core staying. It gets plenty cold up here, and the heater helps extend the driving season.

those boxes on either side are the ballasts for my headlights. I'm unhappy with them there, but they'll probably stay for now. (though I'll probably spray them black.)
