I just got this 1970 spider. 53k original miles, 1974 1800 engine, weber 32/36, Ansa exhaust, nice Cromadora wheels, almost perfect chrome, rebuilt front end. A couple of the running lights, windshield wipers, backup lights don't work, hazard flasher switch works backwards (and only when the ignition switch is on), heater control backwards and doesn't completely shut off, a little rust in the engine compartment. OP replaced the wood console, so I'm hoping it's just a couple of loose wires when he shoved it back in.

I have a 77 and love the thing but if I had to do it again, and I may some day , I would go with a early bumper car like yours. Very nice in general and extremely nice under the hood, definately looks like a keeper to me.

Yeah, I love the early bumper stye, that was a motivating factor in upgrading. Now I have to sell my '76 (in the background), no room in the garage. It needs work that my new one doesn't.

The Weber 32/36 + headers give it noticeably more pep than my '76.

Are you sure it is an 1800? Given the crank driven dizzy, it would appear to be a 1438 cc, the size motor that originally came with the car. In my mind that would be a plus as the car looks amazingly original.

several things tell me the motor is not a 1438. engine bay is surprisingly stock with the original brake reservior. The 70 style is my favorite with the flat hood and the gawdy side lights. drove one for 23 years as a daily driver. the last half with a 2L carbed motor. Nice score, dude!

can you tell me what this breather element is connected to on your car in the picture? when i got my spider, the PO had one just like it connected to a vacuum port on the intake. you could hear the loud sucking sound from it when the car was running. i took it off and plugged it and adjusted the idle and it seems to be running better.

Breather most likely goes to the oil/vapor separator on the block. Common to have to do something like this when you have an aftermarket air cleaner with no inlet for the breather hose or if back pressure was an issue and it was sucking oil in. I doubt the latter looking at the cleanliness however.

The hose used to connect to the stock air cleaner.

I got all the exterior lights working except the backup lights, just needed new bulbs. It looks like the windshield waasher was removed to make room for the exhaust headers. Wipers seem to work now, but seem a little slow. Heater cable may just need adjustment.

I'd like to keep the '76, but so far the cheapest storage I can find is $100/mo. I'll keep it for a while

Check the engine stamp code against a cross-reference and that should tell you engine size. Noticed the blank-off on the exhaust-side dizzy location.
