876 Azzura Met Paint

Post by davery »

I had the master cylinder fail and it leaked fliud all over the engine bay. The paint bubbled up. When I replace the master cylinder, I am going to need to sand and paint. I found a spray can of 876 Azzura Met in the UK, but they will not ship to the US. Does anyone have any ideas? Since it is in the engine bay, it does not have to be exact. I was thinking of looking at the Chrysler Butane Blue to see if it was close. I guess I could have some paint custom mixed, but I do not have a gun.
Of course, I plan on getting the car painted in the next three months. I guess I could just disassemble the master cylinder and then clear that area and have it towed to get painted.

Just a thought! Removing a master cylinder is a pretty easy job. A tow bill could cost a few clams. Why not disassemble the master at the paint shop. The only issue with that being you would need to re-assemble and bleed the system to drive it home. Having the shop bleed the brakes might be less expensive than two tow bills and save you some time and aggrivation during the process.

That's an idea, but what do I do in the meantime? I can't leave the metal bare. Maybe I could prep the area and primer before I replace the master cylinder? Any special primer to use?

Are you going to have the engine bay re-painted also when you get a new paint job in a few months? If not, youmight as well sand, prime and paint now to get it right.

TCP Global can get you the 876 color, either for a gun or in spray cans. Check post #2 in this thread.

So I think this color was available on the 82 spider and I think the 876 is a Pininfarina number. Does anyone know the Fiat number for this color from an 82 Spider? Fiat has something called an Azzurro Metallic with the number 474. I am wondering if it is the same.

Depending on how extensive the paint damage is, and if you want it done right and looking good without a bunch of overspray, there's a fair bit of disassembly, at least more than just removing the master cylinder, as you've got brake and fuel lines and other such clutter.

I had the exact same thing happen, and by the time I got around to addressing it there was quite a lot of puckered paint. As I was restoring the car top to bottom, and the engine was out, it wasn't too bad, as I was able to easily remove the booster and crossmember too. I had Tower Paint (http://www.apstowerpaint.com/) mix up a batch of paint in a spray can off the original Fiat paint code, and it was a perfect match (and from what I understand, a lot of better shops can do this as well)

Did you get the enamel or acrylic lacquer touch up paint? I do not have any experience in painting a car and I am trying to figure all this out. Lacquer or enamel? Basecoat or single stage?

My car is red, so I opted for single-stage enamel, but at the time that might have been all they offered. I did buy their matching primer. Metallics are usually two-stage, but you're probably OK not doing a base/clear on the engine bay, particularly if you're limiting the painting to a relatively small area. Tower Paint has changed since I last used them (their building burned down and I think they might have merged with another company), but regardless of whether you use them or a local shop I'd just opt for whatever they recommend (as long as they are able to match the color).
