Cleaning Parts - Varsol, Kerosene or ? - What's best?

Post by imario »

Can anyone tell me what is the best degreaser for bearings and engine parts in general. One that will not overly affect the rubber and plastic components adversely.

I prefer mineral spirits.

Mike - Is that mineral spirits as in rubbing alcohol? What other kinds are there? I am going to build a wash station so I would need a few gallons of the stuff.

no, as in petroleum spirits, or a petroleum based solvent.

Varsol/Mineral Spirits are petroleum based and since they are orangic in nature that work well with other organic based things like grease and such and generally won't be too harsh on those rubber and plastic parts.

btw, just to make it clear: Varsol/mineral spirits/petroleum spirits, all different names for the same thing.

Thanks Danno. By the way, I got the box of parts today so just waiting for the bumper to arrive. Funny they did not come at the same time. Will give you a glowing feedback. I paid no duty or anything on these parts so if the bumper is the same, I will go ahead and order those parts we discussed.

that was the plan. I even played the whole thing out at the post office for the heck of it. "Umm, I need to mail this to my Uncle Mario in Canada...."

I think it did make a difference. Probably saved me a few bucks - thanks. Interesting to note that USPS Ground claims delivery 4 - 6 weeks. It got here in 2 weeks. Keep that in mind for future deals. Why pay almost triple shipping costs for only a few days difference?

haha...

ahh, man...I don't know if you have to go that far, but it's funny

Yeah, I've found the same thing with shipping. I usually just ship the cheapest, unless it's during the holidays
