124 Sport / 1600 Badges - Barrel Clips?

Post by supplyguy »

Was hoping to mount the 124 Sport and 1600 badges I bought from someone here last year, now that my car is painted. However, they have studs without threads on the back, and with no access from behind the rear center valance, thinking only barrel clips will do. Anyone have experience with mounting this way - size and sourcing for barrel clips? Thanks.

You have no idea what you have started here at AR.... Csaba and I have been arguing for hours. I say that originally the early cars (1600 & 124 Sport ) emblems were held on with barrel clips. Csaba says Im "sooooo wrong". Micro fiche has left me high an dry so far. Let me check some parts book when I get home tonight.

That all said, I think used the side emblem plastic clips to hold the 1600 & 124 Sport emblems on my car.

My apologies.....you all have been good to me and I hate to start a squabble. With no access from behind, choices are either barrel clips of some sort, and over lunch I considered the merits of drilling holes through the inside trunk panel to surgically position some clips from behind. Figuring I will drop 5-10 on each side before successfully mounting, this could get expensive. Maybe I just saw off the studs and Elmer's glue them on.

Rather than Elmers, try a couple of dabs of clear silicone - like the stuff you put around your bathtub.

I dug through parts books all the way back to '68 including some rare Stradale versions... And it appears that originally they were attached using affection.... 'cuz there is no mention of clips anywhere on the Spider.

The Coupe however used the plastic barrel clip in '73 (script emblem clip). And there is a mention of a barrel shaped metal clip (Fiat P/N 88551 (long NLA)) in the '68 parts books but there is no reference where they go.

I used the modern plastic clip on my '72.

.... I know Im going to hear it from Csaba in the morning.
.... Thanks Chuck!

Appreciate all the research! What modern plastic clip did you use?

Shameless plug......

As I recall ... from 5 years ago... I used a series of small drill bits to remove the paint and enlarge the hole after the car was painted... since the new paint reduced the size of the original hole.

Email me if you want to buy them from us... and I can probably USPS them rather than use the web store.

We have come full circle. I bought those from you already but thought they were not usable for this! My bad. These clips appeared to be too shallow in the back for the pins/studs on the emblems - do I drill through them to make way? Presume I drill the smallest hole possible in the valance to securely wedge these plastic clips with a small hole in the back of the clip to create as much tension on the stud once inserted? Appreciate the help, and only posting here instead of emailing or calling you in the unlikely event there are others as moronic as me who could use this info later. Take care - Chuck.

Success - mostly. The medium barrel clip from MAC ((0.120-0.130) worked perfectly for the 124 Sport and 1600 emblems. Drilled a hole with a 3/16" bit and the clips went right in, and the emblem snapped in nice and tight. Only down side - I drilled slightly off for the 1600, the clips ended up oh so slightly distant than where they needed to be, and the 1600 bent and snapped. So now I need a new 1600 and will have to be creative on redrilling. Ugh.
