Is there something missing ? - Gear Selector

Post by adrians »

Hi,

Is there suppose to be some type of cover on the top of the gearbox/transmission gear selector ?

When I remove the selector rubber boot - this is was I saw !
Am I missing a plate or rubber seal or something ? What stop the dirt from flying up and getting in ?

there is a triangular piece that sits over top of the rubber boot, but i don't recall anything going under the rubber boot.

There are two boots; an inner rubber one with a square opening that attaches to the transmission, and an outer beauty one that attaches to the console. The inner has a foam gasket around its perimeter that snugs up against the underside of the tunnel to keep crap out of the selector. Judging from the looks of your picture, yours is missing. They are available from the Fiat catalog suppliers.

Great,

I have one of those - just purchased it, however it was purchased as the internal rubber seal, for on top of the transmission tunnel.

Looking at the picture (of the boot), which way does it go on, is it top side up in the photo ?

Do I need to remove the shifter extension to get it on ?

Thanks again

It attaches upside-down from your photo. I installed a new one while the transmission was out, but I would think you could wrestle it on from the inside of the car ... if the console was removed. It is a friction fit to the outside of the tailpiece; that doesn't need to be removed. Anybody else replace one with the transmission in-place?

Thanks,

A bit of washing up detergent around the selector shaft, and a bit of effort - without impaling myself on the shaft - and it's on. I added a cable tie to ensure a tight seal.
