Component ID - Fiat Dino

Can anybody help identify what the large black cylindrical component with the curved black hose coming from it in the centre-left of the photo below, is?
The car is a 1972 Fiat Dino 2.4 Coupe. The component in question seems to be an electric pump, but I've no idea what it pumps.

My new baby arrives next Thursday so will be sending it straight to Phil for a birthday

I could be wrong, but it could be a vacuum pump as i do not see a brake booster.

No it's not mine - unfortunately. It belongs to a member of our local club and it was on display at our last monthly meeting and we couldn't figure out what the component was.

I could be wrong, but it could be a vacuum pump as i do not see a brake booster.

Thanks Ted, I thought of that as well, but one of the pipes from that component is connected to the cam-cover - although if it's vacuum it could also be connected to a crankcase ventilation system.
