ANSA Muffler

Just picked up a new ANSA muffler for the spider. Does it help with performance or just sound nice or both? Anybody currently using one?

My '81 that I just got came with one, and IAP headers. The remainder of the exhaust is stock. I haven't driven a stock spider in 10 years, so I'm not sure that it helped much with the power, but it's not horribly loud. In fact, I think my Miata's stock exhaust is louder. There will be some adjustments to the system soon (read: removal of flow and sound restricting devices) that should help the sound!

Anyway, it looks nice, sounds nice and won't make the neighbors angry - if that answers your question.

I just put one on my car, but it replaced an identical (though rotted out) Ansa muffler. Can't say it does anything to the performance, but it sounds great (could be just a little louder for my taste, but better for the neighbors). I am not using a resonator either, so don't worry about it being too loud -- it isn't. I think the dual polished tips also look good on the car.

Yes. It has the stock Legend Turbo as well, though I don't think that would effect the sound any.

Does anyone have recordings of the sound anywhere? I'm looking to buy one. Nothing really wrong with my current muffler, but if its a significant and good change, I'd like to get one.

is it sound you are after, or performance? the ANSA gives a great sound, and that sound does change depending on what else is in the system. with our without a resonator, with or without a cat will make a difference on the sound.

if it's performance you are after.... you need to concern yourself with not only the exiting air, but also the incoming air. and, think size. 2" is drastically better than 1.75". a new technology cat verses an OEM cat makes a huge difference as well.

Well, any more performance I can squeeze out of her is appreciated, but I think I'm more after sound with this one, and the cosmetic appeal. There's very little special about my current setup, so its not very powerful. I was just wondering how much different it sounded, and whether or not it is worth it.

For a "better" sound...in comparison to the stock muffler, there is no comparison. the ANSA just sounds better; especially if you attend any event where there are other Spiders present. the swap away from the stock style muffler is one of the most aesthetically pleasing modifications we tend to do.

however, the ANSA is not the only example of a "better" sounding muffler. I've not specifically heard Mark Allison's...yet. I own a Danny O'Donnell stainless and love it.

in the long run, unless you are not planning on EVER increasing the breathing of your engine, the ANSA won't be your last muffler.


attend some events where other Spider owners are present. Ask them what exhaust they are using, and why. Sound is a relative word. and what you hear inside the cockpit is not the same as what we hear outside your car.

Everything stock on a 75 1800 and the ansa made it sound more.........."manly"! Do it. But as everyone else said it only changes sound, not performance.

IS the ANSA muffler available with a 2.25 inch inlet pipe?

i think our standard suppliers ONLY carry one version of the ANSA for use on a Spider. you'd need to getcherself a reducer to fit a 2 1/4" pipe.

Won't that defeat the purpose of a larger 2.25 pipe? The exhaust gasses will get bottle necked in the muffler entrance...
I may have to go with a different muffler.
