Mark, you get 36mpg out of a Chevy Cobalt 5-speed with a 2.2L. Why get the slower and anemic 500

So, is Fiat a Manufacture claim I should then trust? The 500 is cute...and thats why I would not buy it. It is european car in size and looks out of place on an American road. If it was the third car in a family to run to the store every once in a while, maybe. Good for a high school or college student. 5 mpg one way or the other should not sway a buyer, because we are only talking about $3.50 a fill-up more. And for a few less mpg, you can get a much better car. Comfort, room, power, and amenities always come before a few extra mpg.

The Chevy Cobalt estimated mpg is highway miles, not overall, and that's probably on a flat, straight road with no wind...or on a dyno. :roll: Heck, my Buick Park Avenue got 33 mpg on the highway. I don't know why, with all the advanced engineering available today, cars get worse fuel mileage than 20 years ago. I think Fiat has a chance if they decide to build in the US and can keep the prices competitive.

Your right about hwy milage. That is why above I said that even if you took off about 5 mpg, to make it more an average, I think the Fiat 500 is underpowered and lacks any trunk space, for what you get from the others. I also would not want to be in the back seat when you get hit by a Ford F-150 or a Cadillac Escalade. In Italy, they only get hit by scooters.

Having driven the car in the pics for a couple of hundred miles, I make these observations.

1) It is no powerhouse, but is a BLAST to drive. It has NO trouble keeping up with 65+ MPH highway traffic, and feels plenty peppy around town;

2) The fit and finish is outstanding. Everything you touch and see is quality;

3) Although I never bothered to gauge it, the car's owner claims to get 50 MPG;

4) Crash rating, I hear, is excellent (can't say from personal experience, thank God) :shock:

5) Everyone who sees it wants one.

Hope this is helpful! :)

I saw a show once about this guy who drove his hybrid just to get the best mpg possible he claims
71 is his best but also admitted sometimes he held up traffic doing it ! driving slow etc etc
i'm sure we all can get better MPG by watching our driving habbits .

The inside room of the 500 was pretty good for a car its size some compact cars have less room
for the passengers but bigger foot prints ( no i'm not talking about big foot here ) wheel spacing
over all length and width etc etc . I've never been into the 500s and maybe that has something to
do with me not really being into this 1 all though it is kinda cool looking, different what have you
if it was a Ferrari or BMW i still wouldn't be crazy about it . If it looked like crap or seemed to be made
cheap i think we would of heard about it by now it's had some good reviews . Once i drive one
maybe ill become a fan >?

If anything we could be happy that Fiat has a interest in coming back here and finally have a option
for us Italian sport car crazed people !
