Can't figure out what just happened...

Post by Vandrid »

So today I go out to check my fluids, look at my spark plugs, clean the engine a little, just a quick check before I take out the car. Found a bit of oil on the top of my air filter housing. I decided to take a look at the air filter and found oil in my air filter area... next I found brass shavings in the filter housing. I have no clue what happened and don't know what they are, or how concerned I should be. Can anyone identify what is happening?

That really weird, never seen anything like that. However, I would love to know how to use pasteboard that you used to post the pick.

The oil is probably coming up through the breather tube, but the brass shrapnel, that is odd.... Mice? Cover hold down screws damaging brass inserts? Very odd. Multiple pieces that large would not likely be carried up the breather tube.

The big breather hose has a flame arrester inserted into it. I wonder if those bits you found are from it breaking apart. You should check that hose and take a look inside.

That sure looks like the source! I guess large pieces CAN be carried up that tube. Surprising to me.

Did we have a back fire event while starting one day?

Found out it was the spark arrestor. The crankcase hose was worn from wear and age letting air in the hose and blowing oil and the arrestor out in the air filter housing. That's my theory at least. I'm now replacing that hose as well as a mirriad or other parts. I'll let you all know how it goes

I replaced this hose few months ago without the flame arrestor. The mechanic told me that puting it in it's just adding problems. Hope that i do well

I'm doubting this is true and I'd bet it's an easy bit to install should you decide to do so.

It probably collects some oil mist as well and helps keep it from getting up top.

Fits right at the top of the tube and you just push it in. Done. I think mine was under $3 on autoracambi
