Bryan, you are correct in that the problem showed up when I shifted into any gear (all 5 plus reverse).
I'm not convinced that the issue is completely resolved but it is much better, for whatever reason. Maybe it was just coincidence that after disconnecting the clutch pedal switch the problem mostly resolved.
I'm still searching to resolve it completely. For all I know, it may not even be related to the circuits mentioned.
Rain forecast today so I won't be driving. I'll also install a new ignition coil (the original is still in use), maybe just throwing money at the problem, but cheap insurance as Steiny mentioned.

Re: Engine want s to die when put into gear
Thanks, Jeff, for the additional info. As I understand it, the idle is fine if you hold in the clutch (thus activating the clutch pedal switch when it was still connected), but the engine only starts to falter when you subsequently try to slide the transmission into (any) gear. That tells me that the transmission is either putting a mechanical load on the idling engine, or an electrical switch is being activated that is doing something to mess up your idle. If you're not the original owner of the car, there's always the possibility that someone monkeyed with the wiring for these switches in the past, leading to odd issues.
Not to beat a dead horse, but I would be interested in hearing how the car is working in the future (and please send some of that rain in my direction!).
