So, the car was fixed. I was told there was a lot of air in the system and was vacuum bled. Drove perfectly and stopped smoothly...for a bit.

Then the brakes clamped and that was that. Had it towed back and once the brake was released by the nipple(?) it went back to normal. The drivers side hose collapsed internally, just like the description on Auto Ricambi's site said. Good thing I bought the hoses and washers, too.

Just waiting on the thermostat tee....

Okay, next issue...

I have a belt cover that's been off for a while. Since I have to replace some thermostat parts I want to put it back.

However, the holes line up above, but the belts are in the way and I can figure out how to fit the cover properly.

Is there an angle I'm missing or is there something else to remove?

This is the timing belt cover that you want to put back on? Which belts are in the way? Alternator/water pump, smog pump or A/C (if you have them), or the timing belt itself?

Professor Cucchi, you've lost me here. If you remove the alternator belt and put the timing belt cover back on, and then put the alternator belt back on, is the issue that the alternator belt is rubbing against the timing cover? Or ?????

Sorry for the confusion. I am trying to remove as little as possible.

Is there any way of slipping the cover back into place without removing any other parts?

I can't find any picture that helps either. Should the alternator belt be behind or in front of the cover?

Is your alternator on the driver's side of the engine? My older Fiats have the alternator on the passenger side, so the belt does not interfere with the timing cover and the only thing you have to remove to remove or replace the timing cover is some coolant and the top radiator hose. On your car, if the alternator is on the driver's side, you should just be able to loosen the alternator mounting bolts enough to slide off the fan/alternator belt, and then slip your timing cover on.

I'm pretty sure the alternator belt goes outside of the timing belt cover, but it's been several decades since I've owned a spider 2000.

Thank you Bryan. The alternator is on the driver's side, so I'll loosen just enough to slide the cover in.

I'm hoping that's all I need to do.
