Lada ignition switch, key won’t come out in off position

Post by murrayr6 »

So I have a lada ignition switch unfortunately. I have installed the painless wiring kit in my fiat and it works perfectly except for one thing. The lada key won’t come out of the switch in the “O” position. They only place it will come out is the “III” position. This on original wiring may not be a big deal, but with the painless kit it is..... with the key in the III position my ignition and exciter wire are left powered on. Which of course results in the car still being powered even with the key out of car. I have messed around with the wiring a bit but the only way to fix that is to have all the powered wires expect starter on the 30/1 prong which is not really a good idea. So to make a long story long, my question, finally, is this: is there a way to make the key come out of the lada switch in the “O” position or is it possible to somehow break the contact on the III position?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Not sure it will help, but on Mira in the library there is a document all about ignition switches and the differences between original Sipea and Lada, along with suggestions for wiring. It might help. Zachmac wrote it.

Yeah I saw that. What I figured out is I would have to jump my ignition, accessories, and lights together. I have relays for the lights so I’m not too concerned about the lights part but that sounds like a bad idea.

I could shove all that threw a relay then just have the starter wire, power, and the trigger running through the ignition switch. That would decrease the current in the switch a lot.

Actually I really like that last idea. Now we are really thinking outside the box. The answer is always more relays...

Have you looked for a serviceable used Sipea ignition switch? Personally I feel Sipea switches are much better quality then the Lada switches. The locks are better constructed having 5 tumbles where the Lada have 3 and the electrical portion also has 1 more set of switch contacts inside. I think a 1977 Spider ignition switch used the 6 cavity connector so the switch simply plugs into the original cars harness.

I have. So I re-wired the car with a painless kit, which works beautifully. But it also means no more original wiring. I’m not opposed to spending a good chunk more money to get the sipea switch but if it functions electrically like the lada switch I’m going to run into the same problem.

The Sipea ignition switch has 3 positions "off" "on" "start" The key is removed in the "off" position.
