Tick tick tick ticking

Post by joelittel »

When my car (‘80 fuel injected) is running there is a constant tick tick tick tick ticking that comes from the area of the relays.

I would have guessed this was valve noise but my mechanic says he’s sure it’s noise from the relays.

The car runs fine, any idea what this might be?

Drop the relay panel down (keep everything connected and plugged in), start your car and listen to each relay by using putting the business end of a long screwdriver on the relay and the other end against your ear. Without hearing it, I would suspect the double relay.

Use a short piece of hose like a stethoscope to trace it. This may be a bit of a stretch given the area you're thinking but it sounds like an exhaust leak between the manifold and block. If that's the case you might try loosening the brace that runs between the trans and exhaust. That has been known to hold the exhaust manifold from tightening against the block..

Bad soldering in the double relay.
