One Dang Wire

Post by rodo »

Nearly there with the wiring. Trying to get my car ready to, at least, crank the engine for the first time in years. Upon advice I've plugged in all the gauges. (My car is an '81) This was not hard. But there is one wire I cannot account for. It is from the back on the speedo. It is not one of the five that go to the plug. It is a red/orange wire that comes from...something, at the back of the speedo. It and a black wire come from this same wee port/hole/fitting, something. The black wire is short and goes directly to a soldered ground (I assume) on one of the lamp fittings. This red/orange wire is maybe ten inches and appears to have been cut. There is no fitting. I looked at the wiring diagrams and there IS a red/orange wire from the speedo, sort of: there is one that runs from the other side of the speedo wiring plug (the half the plug from the speedo plugs with). It is clearly not that wire. I cannot find any other red/orange in the diagrams. Suggestions?

I'm not sure what year Spiders have the Exhaust Gas sensor warning light. Theses cars have a Lambda sensor switch located above the gas pedal mounted to the side of the pedal assembly bracket that is between the firewall and the dash. The single wire that goes into the back of the speedometer is an input to this switch assembly. The switch assemble has a long pigtail with a multi pin connector on the end. The connector is often located above the relay panel below the glove box. The wire goes from the speedometer to this connector. People often cut this single wire when removing the dash. Some wire diagrams show what appears a single bullet connector in the wire but I haven't seen one close to the speedometer. The wire diagrams show this wire to be yellow with a red trace.

Hope this helps

thanks, and made perfect sense. Weirdly, my wiring diagram does not show that wire coming from that spot but when sitting in the car I did find the other end of the wire...qnd it goes right to that wee box below the glovebox. Easy fix.
