VIN/Year Question

I'm new to this form and have a pretty similar issue with a 1983 Spider I have owned for about 10 years.. Here it goes

I seem to have multiple VINS on vehicle and was wondering if you could explain why. I believe I am the 2nd owner (aside from the dealer I bought it from). The engine bay has ZFR124DSO*05501723..
the front window tag is ZFRASOOB DS501723...
The door jam has ZFRASOOB5D551723...
and USAA and vin check programs check the VIN as ZFRASOOB5D5501723.

So this means the door jamb is 16 digits and missing a zero....The window tag is missing a 5 between the B and D and 16 digits.. And on the frame has a 124 in the beginning and is 17 digits.

Any clarification or break down of these numbers will help with my confusion and lack of understanding

Hi Chris,
the 17-digit VIN is added by FIAT from 1981 for the US- and Canadian market. The shorter ZFR124DS.. chassisnumber is the european identification number. "DS" means the last series after AS, BS/BS1, CS/CS1, CS2, CS0.

So everything's allright! The real identification number is: ..5501723! You have the 1723th Spider from the last (DS-)series. Last DS-Spider gots no. ..11940, documented in the worldwide spider registry!

b.t.w.: Your car should be built in 03/1983!
