What kind of paint should I use?

Keeping it sharp - paint, wax, detailing, etc.

What kind of paint should I use?

Post by RobertwFiat124 »

I have a red 1977 fiat 124 and it has several bubble spots and little rusted chips on it. I will be repairing these issues but am trying to get the right kind of paint. What kind should I use? I know red, but any tips as to what specific color code I should look for and what specific type of paint? I know it's not a modern paint type. Just trying to find something that would match it somewhat decently (car is for fun, not for show).

I don't know much about paint brands, but if you want to look at Fiat colors, try:
https://paintref.com/paintref/index.shtml
I've heard this website doesn't always work intuitively on a smartphone, but if you select "Fiat" very near the top where it says, "select a make" and then choose "1977" on the next page, you should get the Fiat paint codes for that year. Looks like Fiat had about 4 red colors for 1977.

Red is one of the worst colors for fading. Chances are slim it''s original on a 40 year old car. Many auto parts stores can scan your color and mix paint to match. They can even put it in aerosol cans. You would be amazed at how well a good color match can blend in if you give it the proper cure time and follow with polishing to even out the gloss.
