Codice Statistico

Post by alfredhamstra »

Hello all, I just bought a 1981 TURBO spider.
http://www.buro-ro.nl/spider/38%20Turbo/index.html
All original, original paint and stripes (only hood repainted), original carpets (needed cleaning in the bath, now nice condition) and original seats (needed some work). Some minor surface rust, but no holes. Car came from San Fransisco. Original (i think...) car radio Concord.

When i took the carpets out I noticed on two places small silver colour decals with
CODICE STATISTICO
No 078335930

I had 20+ spiders over the years but never with these decals.
They look original.
Anybody know what they are?
Translation should be Statistical code, but for what?

Greetings
Alfred

Alfred, where specifically were these labels? And were they attached to something like the carpet, or directly to the chassis?

I have not seen these, but I'm thinking they are just a production code for a particular item.

That car is original and sweet!

I'm not a big fan of the turbo but that is pretty awesome. Shows some age but that just makes it more authentic.

I hope it runs as good as it looks.

Hi Alfred

Sorry to go off track - do you still have your volumex spider too ?

I was just wondering how they compare

Hello Chuck
No and Yes.
The nr 35 is sold long time ago.
I bought the first Volumex spider instead, nr 00001
What you need to compare?

I was thinking to compare performance of the supercharged motor vs the turbo motor ?

I think both have about the same boost and same overall power but I had always thought that the volumex was more smooth with power

So Volumex #1 congratulations - is that one of the red prototypes ? I have seen press articles with both red (Abarth red and not the Amaryllis or burgandy red of the production volumex cars) and also black cars. These so called prototypes were press cars or cars for the shows I think but I don't know if they were part of the original 200 cars or not.

I don't know anything about the Volumex, but I remember test driving the US turbo spider when it came out in late 1980/early 1981. While it was quick, it was not as fast as I expected, in part due to the low boost (5 psi if I recall) and added weight. The road tests in magazines like Road & Track, Car and Driver, etc. also noted this.

I'm not disparaging the turbo, and it is relatively rare and therefore valued.

The turbo did not have much more added weight. Just the turbo, some switches and a added turbo manual :-)

This is my third turbo, and owned two volumexes. I always prefered my second Turbo over all cars: turbo worked really well and it was black with beige interiour: the best colorcombo in my opinion. Shortened bumpers, slightly lowered.

But VX also drives very very nice…

You are correct, and I vaguely recall that the turbo that I test drove had other options added to this particular car, so the added weight was more like 200 lbs. I don't remember the details.

I'd love to drive a "modern" spider, since all my recent ones have been late 60s or early 70s. It's been 35 years or more since I owned a spider newer than 1978. :D

Hello Alfred,
I think our cars are the proof that FIAT tried to optimize the production of their spiders ;)

I also found this little sticker. I carefully took it off and stuck it on after painting my Spider.

Here is a photo of my sticker.
Fiat was not able to tell me what this sticker means....

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this group but a Fiat enthusiast for many years now (no cars, i'm afraid, only data).

A few words on "Codice Statistico".

Content
Codice Statistico has a sequential assembly plant number (in seven digits), and then the assembly plant code, in two digits.
So that
074150830 is essentially Plant #30, vehicle #741508.
"Assembly" relates to final assembly, post stamping and paint.
The sticker is hidden behind the trim, mostly under the rear seat. On some models it can be found in the engine compartment.

Usage
These stickers are applied across the Fiat globe, starting in 1975. Fiat's assembly plants internal network at the time was very complex. As a result, it is many times impossible to define where did the final assembly take place, other than looking at the Codice Statistico. Thinking backwards, I can only assume that this served as a simple way of counting how many vehicles were assembled in each plant.
These stickers are still being applied at Fiat's plants, today.

The code
Assembly plants were coded starting from the main plant in Turin, then based on their significance/proximity to Turin:
10 Mirafiori
20 Rivalta
30 Lingotto (where 124 Spiders were brought to from Pininfarina and assembled until that plant was shut down)
40 Cassino
50 Termini Imerese
60 Desio (Autobianchi)
70 Unknown, maybe Iveco Suzzara
80 Chivasso (Lancia)
90 Barcelona (SEAT)

and later on:
65 Melfi
71 Val di Sangro (Sevel Sud)
81 Arese (Alfa Romeo)
82 Pomigliano (Alfasud)
91 maybe Seat Pamplona
92 Fiat Brasil
93 maybe Bielsko Biala (Poland)
94 Zastava
95 Tofas (Turkey)
96 Tychy (Poland)
