Keys - ignition and trunk

Post by skykng »

The keys to my 1982 Spider have been inexplicably lost: ignition (switch replaced long ago) and trunk (original). Any ideas on getting some replacement keys are welcome, please. I sure don't want to replace the locks unless I really have to. Is there such a thing as a master? Thanks? Steve

The trunk is the easier one, as it's usually the same as the door key and the glovebox latch. If you can remove either of those, you can take it to a locksmith and get new keys made. There is also an option to remove the license plate and drill a small hole behind it in the right place in the rear panel, through which you can stick a screwdriver and "toggle" the latch to open the trunk.

The ignition switch is harder, and I'm not aware of a master key. You'll likely need a new ignition switch with keys, but the challenge will be to remove the old switch which often requires the key to set it in the right position to remove. If you can remove the ignition switch, a locksmith might be able to make a new key, but it might be cheaper (perhaps considerably) to just get a new switch and keys.

Maybe someone else has a better idea.

Bryan: I have been activated on this forum, so now I can reply with a thank you for your post. One of Murphy's many laws is: "Raising an issue in public will cause the issue to resolve itself." One day after I posted the loss of the Spider keys, and after 4 days of looking, I found the Spider keys. I have since had duplicates made. I had not thought of the glove box lock and door lock being the same as the trunk lock. Great tip, and the since I replaced the ignition switch years ago (not a fun job), I could always do that again. Good solutions and thank you again. very best, Steve

Although its hard to find a real locksmith any more, years ago I had success bringing the entire steering column to an old time locksmith. They picked the lock and made keys. So I didn't destroy the Sipea ignition switch. it was a little pricey though.
