Engine weight

Post by KidDingo »

Going through an engine & gearbox rebuild and I wasn't able to find details about weights, so planning the use of the engine hoist was a bit of guess work.

As I replaced the engine, I took measurements so the information could be shared here.

The gearbox without shifter cover is 31 kg (67 lbs). The clutch, pressure plate, and the flywheel weigh 19 kg (42 lbs).

Various stages of engine build:

85 kg (187 lbs) with:
  • Short block
  • Pistons & crankshaft
  • Flywheel

    107 kg (236 lbs) with:
    • Water pump
    • Cam towers
    • Empty oil sump
    • Oil filter housing w/o filter
    • Engine mounts attached
    • Timing belt & pulleys
    150 kg (335 lbs) with
    • Engine build as above, plus
    • Clutch
    • Bell housing
    • Gearbox (no oil)
    • Rear mounting bracket for gearbox
If you are going to install the engine with gearbox attached, I suggest you remove the rear mounting bracket as it gets caught up in the transmission tunnel. Also, installing with the gearbox attached makes it easier to have the starter attached and oil in the gearbox in advance.

Finally, ignore all the advice about installing the shifter tower cover after the gearbox is in place. Instead, put the cover on before installation, and then install the shifter stick after the gearbox is in place. This approach will save you a lot of ball ache.

Good to know, thanks! Just for posterity, this was for your 2L engine, right?

This all sounds about right, as I can still lift a 2L block with pistons/crank and flywheel and carry it around the garage by hand, and I figure my limit is about 200 lbs. I can't lift a complete engine (block/head/ancillary stuff) by hand.

After you get used to the 2L engines, the early 1438 ones seem light by comparison. Different enough that the front end alignment will change if you swap engines.
