Ok... So I am not even a beginner mechanic but I bough my friends 79 fiat spider 2000 to help him out with some cash flow and now I have a car (a beautiful car) that I need to try to learn how to work on.
First things first...
it smells like gas, inside, outside and all around.... how do I get rid of that smell? where should I check? what should I clean? should I replace anything?

Re: It smells like gas
Is it fuel injected or carb? Of course do not drive it with a gas leak, that's extremely dangerous! Check the obvious places first, fuel lines etc.. It's a good idea to replace them anyway unless you know they have been replaced before since you have some history on the car.
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

the fuel lines run under the carpet on the left side and it's common for them to rust where they are clamped to the floor. Remove the scuff plate on the left side and lift the carpet up. Look for wetness where the fuel line clamps are. I'd also check the lines and hoses from the tank all the way to the engine
