I'd call it a splash pan, with its' purpose being two-fold; to help direct airflow under the car and prevent water from being splashed directly onto the belts, thus promoting slippage

Any advise on how to put the oilpan back in there?

in My first attempt I damaged the gasket and probably tighten the bolts too much? any lbs? how much silicone? on both sides? thread lock?

silicone will cause the gasket to slip out of position, use something tacky like permatex

I use the yellow 3M glue, gasket to oil pan, and some form a gasket for the block side. Silicone only for places where there is a gap such as front cover to oil pan, or rear main caps when they meet the oil pan. Sometimes a little on the bolts to seal.

Thank you your input. I was going to use silicone all over it...... I just finished.... everything looks right!! Is definitely something I'm not looking to do for a 3rd time soon.

Now I need to clean all the oil that came out for driving the car with the broken gasket!! a no! no!.

Can I use a pressure washer to clean from the transmission to the back?

Got a chance to jack up the car and get under there yesterday. All I really ended up doing though was removing the windage tray and the engine mount nuts. Having gotten under the car I want to make sure that it's the transmission I should be jacking up in order to make room for the oil pan. I've never done anything like this before and want to make sure that I'm not gonna crush anything. I took a look under there and to me I just don't see how lifting the tranny would make room for the oil pan.

So I guess I'm just looking for a confirmation--should I just use a floor jack to lift up the tranny?

use a block of wood on top of the jack, and place it under the bellhousing to lift. Make sure the jack is either out the side or facing the rear of the car. That way you have room to work under the engine

I got the oil pan off yesterday and made a big long post about it which doesn't seem to have made it to the board.

Long story short, I also removed the other tube which hangs down into the oil pan and (I assume) reissues the oil. I was only using a little 2-ton hydraulic jack on the bellhousing and couldn't jack it up any higher, so I had to remove both the pump and this tube to slide the pan out.

Will be looking around for someone to beat out/weld the pan back into shape, but I have a quick question: Is there a gasket above the oil pump that I'll need to order a replacement for?

yes, there is a gasket between the pump and block

if you look at online catalogs, check the lubrication page. The gasket should be shown with the oil pump, and it's called an oil pump gasket
