Yesterday I went to see a 78 at a good price. It ran good and some minor surface rust. I looked at the shock towers and the top and bottom looked strong but the middle section had some noticeable rust. I was able to twist my key into the metal with a grinding sound while rust powder came out. No through holes but the top layers of the towers where bulging out. The under body and other rust prone parts looked good but concerned about those towers. The metal where the towers connect looks strong. The weld parts did not show signs of rust. Had a recent front suspension work done and driving it I could not feel any play or sounds.
Question: from the vague descripton that I am giving you, any thoughs on the condition of the towers? I see each one sells new for around $250 at AIP. How difficult, or is it worth it, to cut the old ones out and weld two new ones? Any experiences doing this?
Thanks.
