Floor Drainage Plugs

Post by aliandi »

Hi,

I have removed the seats and carpet of my 1981 Spider in order to address some damp carpeting ( a result of a leak in the vent near the wipers.) Most of the insulation with the backing was soggy and will need to be replaced (with Dynamat?). Anyway, I noticed one drainage hole directly in front of the seat rail on the driver's side about the size of a quarter that I am sure needs to have a plug in it. There are also a couple of other smaller holes that I can feel that appear to be "plugless" on the driver's side under what remains of the tarry coating under the insulation. Just wondering if the plugs for these holes are available or what else would work well. I have enclosed a couple of photos showing the larger opening. Many thanks for any suggestions!

I think any round holes you'll find in your car were put there to assist in the manufacturing process of the unibody, and each of them were plugged with a plastic cap before the car was completed. Drainage outlets (at least in earlier Spiders) were nothing more than a flap stamped in the floor, about a quarter-inch wide, facing the rear of the car. Undercoating and debris often plug these up, and since all roadsters leak ...

Round plastic plugs of various sizes are available from McMaster-Carr or your local hardware store.

Baltobernie,

Thank you for the reply. I will be on the doorstep of the hardware tomorrow at 9:00 a:m when it opens to grab some plugs.

Many thanks!

You might want to consider allowing a few drain holes since there will be water in it again.
