Shift Knob

Ive been sitting around lately just waiting for parts to get here and I had to do something with the fiat to keep me busy. So, I figured I could use a new shift knob. I widdled it out of a hunk of red cedar, which grows like crazy around here and I have plenty of it stacked for burning. I plan on covering it in a clear glaze that should make it look really nice and also make it hard as a rock. Ill throw up some finished pics once its done. I just got it all sanded down and had to post some pics so far. All I need now is one of those Michigan short shifters I keep hearing so much about to go under it.

throw in a 10mm x 1.25 thread brass insert and i will trade you even up.

Are you using a lathe to carve it up? Either way, it looks great. Can't wait to see the finished pic's.

Nope, that baby was hand carved with a knife....well of course I cut it off the tree with a chain saw then sawed off the bark with a jig saw.
Im going to cover it in tabletop/bar epoxy. Ive used it on other stuff and it always works great. It really brings out the colors on wood. I havent used it on red cedar yet but only assume it will look good.

Mikes so far, on the right. You can really see the red in the cedar before its dry. Im hoping some of that color will come back after I put the epoxy on.

Here is your new shift knob, Mike. I had to start over with a new one because the one I was working on before cracked right down the center while I was working on it. I think this one looks nicer though anyway. I just need to let it dry out for a few days, drill the hole and put in the thread.

I have to go pick up some epoxy this weekend (30 miles to the nearest supply store) so hopefully by sunday/monday one will be done. Ill get some pics up once it drys.

Its still wet and will be for another day or so but It sure is shinny. Once its dry Ill get some "action shots" of it in the fiat.
