So Cal Mark wrote:in practice it might not matter, but in theory if the hot water is allowed to flow into the core with the valve on the return, you could get some warm air from the heater constantly even though water isn't flowing through the core. If the hot water is being pushed against the valve, the temp in the core could be lower. Eventually the temp should somewhat stabilize in the system, but temps do vary throughout the cooling system
Mark,

I hadn't thought about the hot water dead leg length on one configuration versus the other.
BTW, which way is the water flowing? Does it flow from the block through the heater core and then back to the water pump or from the pump, through the core and then to the block? If it is the former then you would pipe it as Denise has shown, block to heater valve inlet, return to water pump connect pipe. if the latter then the way mine happens to be.

Heated water flow exits the back of the cylinder head and flows through the firewall lines to the heater water shut-off valve, then to the heater core, then out of the heater core, back through the firewall to the long steel pipe that connects to the suction side of the water pump . . . I'm about 99% sure.

Looks like the 50/50/ 90 rule is proven again. Given a 50 /50 shot I got it backwards, as I will do 90% of the time! Guess I'll add swapping those to lines to the "to do" list.

Glad it's you that gets to change their setup instead of me. Instead, I'll use my time replacing the master cylinders on my X19. :(

Zack, time for a new rule. It's called the 50/50/90/opposite Rule.

Given a 50 /50 shot to get it backwards, as you do 90% of the time, then do the opposite! That gives you a 90% success rate.

Pope,

Clearly you don't understand the law, no matter what process is used to make a 50/50 decision, including making it and then doing the reverse, you will still get it wrong 90% of the time. Or put more simply, nothing is ever easy and I always get to do it over.

I seem to remember George Costanza on Seinfeld coming to the conclusion that every decision he had ever made was wrong and started doing the complete opposite of what he thought was right. And it worked out for him!

Guys,

New ( used ) rad works great. The heater hookup from the block to the valve is the way I set it up. Sure enough if the flow is cutoff the the heat stops or is at least less. Want to thank everyone for the help and information. The car also runs cooler amazing what happens when you don't have a rad full of crap.

Thanks
