If I were to use a solid cherry board, would it warp? I thought the reason of using the laminate was because of the warping.

The trick is to completely seal the wood on all sides.

Okay, Thanks. I guess I'll just do the dash out of solid wood. Now I have to find a place local to get it. :P

Hey Brady,

I'm still looking forward to meeting you, and seeing your work in progress.

I "might" know a good source for very fine hardwood. I'm a big fan of cherry myself.

Anyway, new dash wood is one of about a thousand things on my list. If you don't find anything local I can check. What are we looking for, something like a board say 6" or 8" X 4 feet? What's the thickness?, 1/4"? (I'm not home I'm visiting in North Carolina so I can't look in the garage.)

The cluster and lid are 11/32". I'll be using 3/8"
The center strips are 3mm, approximately 1/8". My mahogany is 1/4", so I'll router to reduce the area around the dimmer and wiper delay so they'll fit. The extra thickness elsewhere along the strips should help stiffen these warp-prone areas.

Clock's done, hardware back from the plater, center chrome trim arrived from SpiderPoint yesterday. Time to get cracking!

I'll have cut, but unfinished, mahogany sections available this Summer.

I plane my boards down to 3/8" and 1/8" for the center pieces and lower shifter console. Some of the newer models with the laminated dash pieces are a bit thicker so we could probably go a little thicker with no problem.

Denise,

I haven't been around here long enough to know you are in NC. My son is in Charlotte. Love to meet you and see your sweet 72 (my favorite). PM on the way.

Wow! did not know you owned the later model with the different mid console. Any chance you can take a few really clear pics of the lower and radio consoles for me that show front back and side showing how it integrates with the dash and lower console. I have just modified my center console to have two cup holders with swappable ash treys or a combo of both.

Once they get back from the upholsterers I want to make a new radio dash and was thinking of doing similar to the one you have. Wish I could source that section. Does anyone know if the center console changed between model years? Or was it just the uppers that changed?

Now that it is all apart it is the best time to do just that... I will snap a few photos tomorrow.

Jaime,
Did you paint the dash or is that the one out of your other car? If it was the yellow one, did you fix the crack? And what did you use?

Same one. Fixed the crack with some vinyl repair compound and painted it black wtih SEM vinyl paint. But Spiderjim has a better method to repair the cracks. Wish I had seen that thread before. Anyway, let's see how it holds up.

Some information here, but I don't think he has posted the complete process, or at least I have not seen it.
