1980 fi spider black smoke

Post by briangreen »

1980 2000 spider,i have been restoring this car for all most a year.just got the body and paint all done and the car wont run.Tack wont work, the car runs good untill it worms up,then it starts running very rough with black smoke. its loading up! I have replaced the lambda sensor, cold start with switch, a reman air flow sensor, fuel reg, i have 34psi, throttle plate switch and set, auxiliary air reg. Im starting to thank its in the wiring after replacing parts and looking at the wire it has a lot of tape on it. I have a big blue wire coming out of the firewall by the coil it has two wires in it I cant find it in the wire dig anywere it comes out of the ECU can some one tell me where it goes, and allso why its getting to much gas.

pull the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator and see if raw fuel is present. Next step would be to check the resistance of the temp sender in the water tee

no gas out of the reg,and the rest is 3.01 on the temp sender is that bad. i had 5 gal of gas in the car and it ran it out very fast in just two day of working on it, not driving it. allso can you help me with that blue wire come fron the ECU?

the resistance sounds way off. I don't have the specs in front of me, but I believe it's supposed to be in the hundreds
I'll have to look at a wiring diagram for the blue wire. Is it something that's been added? or part of the original wiring?

its part of the original wiring, not added its blue big has two wires in it (its like a speaker wire) + - thanks a lot

I looked up the temp sender resistance, with a hot engine the spec is 260 to 400 ohms.

Here's a link to the FI wiring diagram. I don't see a blue wire to the coil.

according to the wiring diagram, #1 goes to the - side of the coil, #5 goes to the ground side of the ect sensor

i grounded the #5 and it did make it run very good.at a nice idel, replaced the temp sender and it did stop the black smoking.

One more thing on the tac i have GROUND a NEG and POST.
im getting 12.5 from the POST and at idel im getting 3.5 on the NEG and it goes up with RPM IS THE Tac bad?

THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR HELP :)

here is the tach troubleshooting info-
Connect red voltmeter lead to yellow/black wire at tach. Connect black voltmeter lead to ground. Turn ign on.
Meter should read 8 to 12 volts. If meter does not read voltage, repair yellow/black wire from tach to connector for water temp gauge. If meter reads 8 to 12 volts connect red meter lead to brown wire at tach. Connect black lead to ground. Start engine and increase, then decrease engine speed. Meter should increase and decrease too. If meter reacts to engine speed changes, replace tach. If meter does not react, then repair brown wire from coil.
