axle shaft flange thread repair

Has anyone tried using a Time-Sert thread repair insert to fix damaged threads in a wheel lug bolt hole in the rear axle shaft flange? Or a heli-coil?

It seems like it should work.

i have used helicoils, but its still kinda iffy, if everything is not perfect. but you could drill out the axle and use studs, pressed in from the rear, much more safe. just an idea, i put studs in all of my race cars

Bill, do you need the rear axle flange?

I think the flange is integral to the axle shaft. So yes I need the flange. Only one hole is really bad in that the lug bolt wobbles when screwed into it. So I was thinking of repairing 2 holes across from each other so as not to upset the balance.

As for installing studs: does the bearing and caliper mounting bracket need to be removed in order to install the studs?

no the studs will be able to be pulled thru , once drilled the studs can be inserted thru the area between. i dont remember if we did this off the car. if so the flange will give better clearance. just insert the stud and use a nut and a few washers and tighten it down, which will seat the stud.

What size wheel stud did you use? 50mm? 55mm?
