Transmission Switch Dilemma

Post by crazyfiatguy »

Hi Folks - I see 3 electrical switches on the two 5-spd transmissions I have, a 1971 and a 1976 (the 71 is being swapped out for the 76, for now):

1. Backup light switch (screwed into the rear of the tranny extension)
2. 3rd-4th gear emissions switch (US passenger side, black & grey wire, held in with a threaded ring)
3. i dunno (top rear pass side of main casing, one wires & conector tab is broken, one wire is black)

Am I missing something really obvious here? - what could this 3rd switch be for? I wasn't able to find any reference to it in the wiring diagram or shop books I have.

Thanks, Hank

That should be the gear engaged switch.

Manoa Matt - thanks - yes, I put a ohmmeter on it and sure enough, all gears (including reverse) show switch continuity and neutral yields an open circuit. The tabs were broken off the switch, I see no wires to connect this to in the vehicle, and I see no reference in the wiring diagram - I see no way use it.

Does anyone here see a problem leaving it unused?

Thanks, Hank

Gents - thanks for straightening me out; the replacement 5-spd is in right now andI will post some notes/observations for this in a new thread for reference.
