Trying to mount the stock fan back in but noticed that the fan motor housing is just around a 1/2 inch away from the water pump pulley, is that normal or should there be more clearance?
FWIW, I installed an aluminum water pump pulley. Eventually I'm gonna install a Spal type fan but I just want to get her started for now.

Yep, thats normal 1/2" is all you get.

Your Spal fan will be slimmer and provide more clearance.
