air conditioning

Post by wapolo3 »

My 1983 spider has air conditioning. It was not kicking in so I had the compressor tested and it seems to be in good condition, however the mechanic said that it must be a relay since the compressor works. I have no idea where to look for this relay. Any suggestions?

usually the ac system has a pressure switch that prevents the compressor from engaging when the freon is low. Did he hook up a manifold gauge set to test pressure? Did the ac cool when he engaged the compressor?

The guy filled the freon and then engaged the compressor and it worked, however when he tried to do it without the overrided is when the compressor would not kick it. He believes there is a relay under the passenger side dash or in that unit that lies under the dash. Any ideas what relay he may be talking about?

since the ac units were all dealer installed it's difficult to say how it may be wired. You'll have to start checking circuits from the switch and tracing the wires. I'd look for a relay that looks like it's been added rather than a stock unit.

If you are not in the deep South/Southwest, why do you need a/c? Put the top down, wear a hat, go fast. :D
