Automatic transmission filter kit?

Post by nicktheviking »

Looking over maintenance items and saw this. I realize I may be the only one on the board with an automatic, but has anyone gone through the process of installing this filter?

Fiat used the same transmission as in the Chevrolet Chevette. It should be a T-180 but you could take the filter and gasket to your parts house to make sure it matches what they have.

There are a few of us out there with the automatic. I had changed the filter several years ago and it came with a rubber pan gasket (no sealant used). Recently it started leaking badly and tightening did not help. I decided to replace the gasket with a silicone gasket maker (thoroughly clean both surfaces) and it no longer leaks.

Just changed my differential oil(first time ever on a car, went well!) and decided I should soon change my automatic transmission oil. I just ordered an automatic transmission kit tonight from Vicks and some other goodies. So, has anyone ever installed a new filter kit in there auto trans before, easy, medium, hard rating? Thx. 8)

It's pretty easy. The short of it is to drop the pan and swap the filter as its just right there above the pan.

Changing the automatic transmission filter is easy! It's no worse than an oil change in most cars.

After we did ours though, the drain plug leaks! (It probably did before, but the pan was dirty before us.) Nowhere else on the transmission is there a noticeable leak except the plug. Any solutions?

Auto parts stores sell a "universal" rubber plug with a spring plunger, similar to those made for beverage bottles. Typically used for stripped engine oil plugs. You might also try a few turns of Teflon pipe tape on the old plug. It's not like you're going to be removing it every month ...
