So I bought a 77 124 Spider and I love it. Drove it 120 miles home over 2 mountain passes, reaching over 10,000 feet atthe highest pass and did it in average time for a regular car. I was so proud the next day as I drove to the DMV to register it...
As I was feeling very cool with the top down steam just started pouring out from under the dash. After a full days work i've pulled the entire dash, gauges, etc... gotten into the heater core and pulled the heater control valve. The only hang up (yeah right, there were many) is the triangle shaped wire that holds the copper piece of wire on top of the heater core unit... is it necessary? can i just wing it? i'm not quite at my wits end, but close. The only thing that kept me going today was the song "Daddy's cup" by drive-by truckers. Download it. In the meantime, can anyone answer that? should I toss it?
Just to make this clear, this may be a dumb question, but i've never worked on cars before. I guided up in alaska and had to tear apart boat motors, but nothing like this. and you know something I LOVE IT. I have my garage door open, southern rock blaring, a beer and a chew and it is like heaven.
I'm at the half way point on this and want to see it all the way through. my laptop now lives in my garage and the previous posts on here have been amazingly helpful. ya'll are awesome. I've been searching for random small things and found them by looking at an entirely different repair. I was curious about taking the dash off and found it under a radio repair thread. pretty cool. I just want to say THANKS to everyone and let you know that as I get my better I'll be eager to pay ya'll back with pictures, stories and input on repair.
Thanks for everything guys, i'll let you know how it goes as the entire dash and heater core is in pieces right now!
Auggie
Entire dash ripped apart!
Re: Entire dash ripped apart!
it sounds like you have one of the original heater valves with a temp sensor capillary tube. The replacements don't use that anymore. The valve bolts to the heater core with only the control cable and a pipe attached
Re: Entire dash ripped apart!
Thanks mark. i put the new heater valve in and it too leaked everywhere... so i ran to home depot and bypassed it with a piece of copper pipe... now i'm headed to pick up the girl and grab dinner... took me damn near 12 hrs, 5 trips to the stores but im driving again!
