While I'm in there..

Post by boogiedude »

I'm getting ready to replace all the bushings up front. While I'm in there I plan on replacing the wheel bearings and such, but I'm wondering if I should go ahead and do the tie rods/center link as well? If i do, do I need the tie rod sleeves that IAP sells? or can I get away with just the tie rods and clamps and recycling the sleeves? My steering has a bit of a dull/dead spot right in the center but I've never gone in and checked the box for fluid level/adjusting the nut. I'm kind of on a budget but I'm figuring if the splurge is going to be beneficial I might as well do it. Also, should I do the rear bushings?

Do whatever your budget will allow. Replace all the worn out rubber you can! and don't forget about the shocks too! You can re-use the sleeves as long as they are in good shape. Check that steering box!

I am not a fan of just going in and replacing everything, esp if you are on a budget. Why change good parts?? If you test/inspect them and they are bad, by all means change them. But to just change them all just because......doesn't jive for me. But YMMV.
I think checking/adjusting the box first might be the thing to do. Won't cost anything

When I did mine I was going to try to get away with what your thinking until I got the linkage out of the car and found the inside threads of the sleeves were pretty rusted. Decided to replace all of it. If you find the sleeves are still in good shape you might as well re-use them and save the cash.
