Because this car is small, and I am painting the car myself to save money, decided to strip the original paint to bare metal. We build a do it yourself sidedraft booth, and are laying 4 coats minimum of topcoat with 2 clear coats.
Would think the best/ quickest method is chemical strip ?
Not sure if this will lead to any problems or issues ?
Anyone know a downside to this, please let me know.
The only real rust this 72 has on it a bad patch onto of the rear fender, passenger side.
Never saw a car with this much serious rust on top. Anyone else have had this or know why?
The rest of the car including the floor, doors and rockers are rust free.
Only thing to be repaired is what must have been when someone drove over a large rock? Ripped a large hole under the car behind the drivers seat. Could not get ten car on a lift to see it when I purchased it,and no mention was made of it.
But no worries. We are plasma cuttimg new steel and mig welding it in place.

Dont know the condition of the car, so you have to decide it this applies. Chemical stripping is a nasty, messy process. You will have difficulty keeping the chemicals from running to places you dont want it. If you are working in cold damp climate, the surface will begin to rust within 15 minutes. It is paramount that all the solvent is removed so it doesnt raise hell with the new paint. Worthwhile to strip and then use a metal conditioner before paint. If you are trying to remove rust, the paint stripper wont solve that issue. sandblasting is just as bad. you end up with sand everywhere and is nearly impossible to remove it all so it doesnt jump up and bite you when you paint. I am a firm believer is letting sleeping dogs lie. Sand down to the original color or primer and use the opportunity to get the car nice and flat. My car is an 80 and it looks like fiat used some special thick primer surfacer to get the car flat. When i got down to bare metal, i had to flatten all over again.

I agree. Why do the job twice. My step brother has a paint shop and he says that the origional color and primer is the best foundation.

Have seen some restorations where it was stripped as well as not.
Never get the entire story when watching on tv.
