POR15 Product - Feedback

Post by adrians »

Hi,

I was wanting some advice / feedback from anyone who has used the POR15 product on their Fiat. Does it really holdback or stop the rust ?

Has anyone used it on their suspension parts and the cross member ?

Thanks in advance

I used POR-15 to coat the inside of a rusty fuel tank and it worked a treat. In fact, the worst bit was that some of it got onto the threads of the fuel sender studs, and I ended up having to drill the studs out because I couldn't clean the stuff out of the threads. The stuff I used was the silver coating which basically lays a complete new coating over the top of the older, rusty surface (pre-prepped, obviously).

I used POR 15 in the late '70s when restoring my Bugeye Sprite. I have never been happy with the result and over the last 10 years or so it's started to lift off under the wheel arches and on underside of the floor in big flakes. There isn't any rust underneath it though, and it may have been my fault in not preparing the surface correctly.
I didn't use POR on SPYDUH (or any of the other cars which came in between) because I've had excellent results just using Kill Rust paints and products on the suspension components, good quality bitumous paints and sealers on underbody areas, as well as spraying fishoil into the cavity sections.

Curly,

Thanks for the update on the POR15, which fish oil did you use ? SEPTONE ? Was the Kill Rust product really good with the finished look ?

Regards

Sorry, can't remember the brand of fish oil, I found it in the 'automotive' section of our local paint shop. As for Kill Rust, I used their gloss black pressure pack cans. It goes on easily, is really sticky, takes ages to dry (depends on temp, but at least overnight) has reasonable chip resistance and a good finsh - not as glossy as POR 15 but certainly acceptable.

Hi Curly,
I like the color of your car and the way the colors look together. Can you show pics of the car in full view. I don't know much about Fiat colors. Is this a Fiat color? It seems that my 78 was a similar color in the trunk area and under a red respray. Im looking forward to seeing your car. :D

Thanks for the comments Azy, but colour co-ordination has never been one of my strong points (She-who-must-be-obeyed even buys all my clothes  ), and it was one of the negotiated terms of purchase in our household, that the afore mentioned consultant would have the final say on SPYDUH's colour scheme  .

And, No, it's not a Fiat colour. It's called Cherry Black Mica and was available on some Holden Special Vehicles (HSV is the performance arm of GM Downunder) in the early '90s. 'Dearest' calls it Aubergine (eggplant colour) and it changes shades between black, purple and a kind of Coca Cola hue depending on the light conditions. It's also a bugger to keep clean, but 'She' never has to wash it :? .
There are more pics in the links under my signature.
