3D PRINTED PARTS

Hello all I wanted to start a new thread as I am actively printing parts for my 84 Pinanfarina. The car is in fairly great condition with some cosmetic parts needed. I found that with a little effort and my 3d printer I can print many parts. So far I have a windshield tank cap, headrest inserts and am working on a horn cap to use a spare fiat hood emblem. Of course I have to take into account how and were it these parts can be used. mainly avoid under the hood application. I have to first reverse engineer the original, make mods if necessary or recreate a completely new part as needed.

Nice job! I do have an idea for you being your car is a '84. The plastic spacer/gasket that's below the chrome strip/convertible top boat holder on the rear shelf is not available anywhere I've looked. I had an '84 a few years back and when I did a sympathetic exterior restoration I wanted to replace all the gaskets and that was the only one I couldn't source new. I've also toyed around with the idea of doing the conversion on one of my early year cars to cover up the unsightly seam but without that gasket it's tough. The chrome strip and hardware are readily available but I still can't find the gasket! If you decide to ever make them let me know...

I have a co-worker who is working on a 3d printer that prints with aluminum.. Or so he claims... He's pretty bright guy, so maybe.. He says he's currently waiting on some part with a 6 month lead time.. If it works, I'll be building one..

Fantastic ! i am convinced that 3d printing will be a god send for a lot of folks restoring vintage cars.

Holshot, I think I know which part you are referring too. Good idea about printing that part. If and when I get to it I will post.

Yea 3d-printing is the future, currently its in it infancy stage, sort of like the old dot matrix printers, and we all know were we are now. Best thing is that if you need a part you can make it yourself. I can print in any color filament available, or paint as needed. I use black and tan trim paint alot. Most parts have to be created but there are several web sites were you can get parts already created for you to print. I mainly print for direct usage but one can print to make molds for metal, clay casting etc.

Another 3d printed part. I happen to have an extra Fiat hood badge and decided to turn it into a horn badge to replace the small original. First I used the original from my 84', reverse engineered it, modeled in 3d software made some simple mods then printed. After several iterations i was able to create a functional swap and replace horn. For the contacts I used some copper piping brackets trimmed to make the swag connection and for the spring I scavenged it off a surplus pop-up sprinkler. I am happy with the results. I initially used blue material but it can be any of course.

Hello folks. here is my latest printed item. It evolved from my wanting to cleanup the engine bay a bit with replacing the ugly stock air intake plenum with a nice aluminum from Allison. I also decided to replace but keep intact the stock air box with a nice looking cone type filter. I needed a round to square collar so this is what I deiced to make. I didn't want to spend $177 from international on a filter and bracket so I decide to make my own. I had to fabricate a bracket and I used steel for this ( painted black).

I used a spectre 3 inch x 6.5 inch blue cone from Oreileys. And to boot they give military discount! I am happy with results. You can see the blue 3d model collar between the filter and the air valve. I have about 1/4 inch clearance till I hit the frame near the RAD. I can slide the AFM back a bit or clip a bit of the frame.

A company called Local Motors is building 3D printers for manufacturing cars. The goal is to build a printer that will crank out an ABS composite body/chassis/interior in 24 hours and make production take place in MicroFactories near the dealerships. They aim on having cars available for US Roads in 2016.

This is going to get interesting especially with the thought of being able to potentially model and print a replica of a car from the past that is no longer available.

This is pretty cool stuff. I'm sure that the OP has considered this, but I'll state it anyway. Of course, technologies change, so they may be mute points. Also, I know there are people printing entire car bodies, but I'm not sure with what material.

3D printed parts are pretty sensitive to heat. I would have no problem using an ABS or PLA printed part for one of interior parts, but I would do some spec checking for something going under the hood.

Parts are also typically not very strong in certain axes because of the way they are built-up in layers. Of course, in some axes they are VERY strong.

Some material (PLA for example) is water soluble.

The ABS dissolves in some organic liquids and gasses. I know that acetone vapors will dissolve it, so oil and gasoline might, too.

That said, I think it's awesome and can't wait to see what else you print!

Next on list: 3d printed center caps.
This is how I handled my need for these. My original ones were scratched up and the decal was blistered.
Since Ive been printing items for car, house, hobbies. Ive printed almost all StarWars figures, well the ones I like. I decided to print my center caps. I have an 84 Pinin with original cromodora wheels I reverse engineered them added rigidity for stiffness and this is what Ive completed.






Since I can print in almost any color, and finish any method that sticks to ABS plastic which is very tough. I can change out the center logo any time. I plan on getting 4 azzura hood ornaments. I like the sail over the generic Fiat. Every body knows its a fiat.
By the way Ive tested it for about a month now on my wheel and its still on. At least till they get swiped.
