motor and trans swap 1972 124 wagon

Post by georgeramos »

Hi all, I have this posted on another forum as well so forgive me if you've seen it there but I am looking for experience and advice. I am in the process (brutal given the rusty condition of the donor car) of pulling a 2 later and an auto transmission from a spider that I want to rebuild and drop into the wagon. It will be my wife's car and an elbow injury precludes her from driving stick for long rides.

I will have many questions but I want to get the ball rolling so here are a few things that have already come up

1)the donor car is FI, I will be making it carbed, is there a carb or add on fitting that would be used for the "kick down" cable/function?
2)will the driveshaft be the correct length?
3)do I need the whole pedal box or will the pedals and spacers be enough?
4)will I need to modify the trans tunnel to fit the automatic/shift lever?
5)will the 2liter automatic radiator fit in the wagon or should I use a standard 2 liter radiator and a separate trans cooler?

I am aware that if anyone has done something like this it was likely the other way around, auto trans to manual but any recollections/experiences will be very helpful. Also if anyone has any parts from an automatic they might want to sell please let me know that as well.

Thanks so much

georgeramos,

Sorry I have no information/knowledge to add. Just wanted to say that I am glad to hear that you never sold your 124 Wagon. Seems like a good project. Best of luck.

I just saw this post, so maybe you already have your answers.
1 no knowledge.
2 I am sure the length will be wrong, 1st because your wheel base is longer, 2nd because your diff has a shorter pinion shaft than the 2 L. I have not seen it done so I could be wrong. If you have your old driveshaft and the one from the automatic you may be able to mix and match. If you do it wil need to be balanced.
3. You don't need the whole pedal box. In fact you don't need to do anything unless you want to get rid of the clutch pedal.
4. I don't know.
5. The 2L automatic and standard radiators are the same size.
I haven't did this, but have been thinking of putting a 2L injected with automatic in my coupe. I have them, but would need to rebuild both.
