right side engine very hot and smoking!

Post by Martyn »

Hi,

I have just installed a new water pump, thermostat and fan belt. Prior to this I drained and flushed the system. I should mention that the heater valve is siezed in closed position, so couldnt drain or flush the whole system. I also tried to remove the heat shield over the exhaust manifold but without success.

After filling with new coolant and bleeding the system as best I could, I started engine. After a minute or two I saw smoke appear from rhs of engine. The rhs much hotter than lhs. Three hoses warm as was rad, but bottom hose from rad cold as thermostat not kicked-in.

How do I identify what the problem is? And what to do?

Car is a 1985 spider europa.

There may not be a problem. The right hand (passenger) side will be hotter because of the exhaust manifold, and sometimes oil or water or such drips onto the hot exhaust and causes smoke.

What does your temperature gauge inside the car read? If it reads very high, it's likely that you have air in the system that needs to be flushed out. There are many posts on this forum as to how to do that.

Thanks Bryan,

The temp gauge hadn't registered, but will test again this morning.

All good.

No smoking engine, so must have been some coolant. Rest is working as it should: thermostat kicks in, as does fan, temp gauge rock solid at 90c, and no leaks.

Thanks again Bryan
